Will posting to your Instagram account on 11.11 at a full-moon make your brand viral? Most likely not. Why should we be concerned about posting on Instagram at the best time? You can post whenever you want, but you may get more engagement by posting when your audience is available. Let’s get straight to the point and look at when to post to Instagram to benefit your brand.
Is there a best time to post on Instagram?
The short answer to this question is no. This is because each time zone, brand, and sector are different. Let’s face it, if your content is mediocre or poor quality, you won’t see great engagement. There are times when the platform is busiest, and more people use it. There are also peaks specific to your brand and its demographic as well as the content that you post. One of my favorite social media sayings is that “one size does not fit all”. Not all audiences are the same. Not everyone will enjoy your posts. And one strategy may not work for all clients.
That’s fine. This article is not a “one size fits all” type of thing.
The key Instagram demographics and statistics
What will the Instagram landscape look like in 2023? We’ll look at key Instagram stats and demographics.
The American Marketing Association discovered that posting content at the end of the day generates 21% higher clicks than the beginning. Posting at night results in a 9.7% drop in click rates. Deloitte Global estimates that the global social media ecommerce industry will exceed US $1 trillion by 2023. India leads Instagram with over 230 million users.
What are the best times to post on Instagram?
According to Shopify’s sales and peak traffic statistics, these are the best times for Instagram posts.
Thursday: 11 a.m. – 6 a.m. Friday: 7 a.m. 11 a.m. 2 p.m. Saturday: 9 a.m. Sunday: 1 a.m.
They make sense when you examine them. On Monday through Friday, people are on Instagram during their lunch break and before they go to work. Instagram is less active on the weekends, as people are enjoying their real lives! On Sunday evening, Instagram traffic increases as people prepare for the new week. But remember: big brands will hit the feeds during peak hours.
Many brands schedule their Instagram posts to be sent out on the hour. 9am, 10am etc. Schedule your posts for the next hour (9.15 or 10.20) so that they don’t get mixed up with the other posts.
When is the best time to post on Instagram?
Now that you’ve identified the times when users are most likely to scroll, it’s time to find the best time for your brand to post on Instagram.
1. Consider your desired outcome
What do you want to achieve with Instagram? What are you trying to achieve with your Instagram account? Are you more interested in quick purchases, or are you looking to gain fans? Say, for example, that you are running a special lunchtime offer in your restaurant. Consider the following before scheduling your post:
Content you post and whether or not it is appropriate for a certain day. #TacoTuesdays do not belong on Mondays. (Disclaimer – I’d still eat these on a Monday!) Why not create a #SundayFunday to showcase your tasty food, like El Cocina? This post includes opening hours, delivery information, and foodie friendly hashtags. You should time your foodie posts to give people enough time to order and get hungry.
Your post’s goal. What is the goal of your post? Consider an Instagram Reel if your post is about a lunchtime sale or flash sale. Agorapulse makes this option easy to use. You can also experiment with the time of the repeat to find out what works.
Schedule Instagram posts so that they run multiple times.
2. Your top performing posts
Instagram insights can be used in the mobile app to find out more about your audience and their performance. You can view insights about your audience’s engagement on specific posts, Stories videos, Reels and Live videos. You don’t technically need an analytics tool to track your data.
Native tools have very segmented analytics that are difficult to combine.
Agorapulse allows me to manage all my Instagram accounts from one location.
Agorapulse makes it easy to analyze top-performing posts. Social media metrics can be turned into a beautiful social media report. You can also see a breakdown by type of post (Images and Videos, Carousel and Stories, Reels, Reels and Stories), time and performance.
Instagram content tip. If you have taken over an Instagram (as a new social media manager or agency), you can compare the performance of previous months or years. This can help you see the impact of changes to your strategy, content or posting schedule.
You can use your Instagram analytics and insights to discover the best-performing posts so you can create more of them in the future.
3. When is your audience online?
You can easily see if your audience is online using Agorapulse’s intuitive dashboard. This is your unique audience and not just a generic report on peak traffic. Not just by the day, but also by the hour. You’ll be more visible if you note down the time of your posts.
These analytics are specific to your Instagram account, and they provide a clear indication as to when your audience will be online.
Agorapulse can help you determine the best time and day to post on Instagram.
As an example, my @charli_says account has a clear winner on Sunday morning at 6am and Monday at 12pm. This makes sense when you look at my demographics, as the majority of my followers reside in Brazil and USA.
Find out the best time to post and how your audience is structured.
You can use Instagram to post localized content and at the right time for your audience. For example, you could create a post celebrating Independence Day for your US-based friend.
4. Take inspiration from your competitors
Top brands have likely done extensive research to determine the best time to post on Instagram. You can look at the top brands in your field to see when they post, and which times they receive the most engagement.
You might be interested in checking out Instagram of a large brand, such as Estee Lauder, if you work in the beauty industry. You can find out when they post on Instagram, which posts get the best response, and where their fans live. This can be seen by clicking the likes for each post, and then checking out a few. You may need to do this for a few minutes, but it will give you some valuable insights into their content, schedule, and fans.
An example of a beauty company posting on Instagram at the right time
Browse through previous posts and see how the retailers prepared for major retail holidays such as Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
Instagram posting tip: Do not compare your likes to theirs if they have a vastly different fan base. Look at engagement percentages instead. Estee Lauder, for example, has over 4.4 million followers, but their engagement rate on this post was 977 likes. That’s 0.02%. This is below the average engagement rate of Instagram, which is 0.67%.
5. Agorapulse automates your Instagram posts
You can use a social media posting calendar to ensure that your posts go up at the correct time, day and even month. Many marketers keep their social media posting schedules in an Excel sheet or Google Drive document. This wouldn’t be feasible for us as an agency, with the many accounts we manage. We use Agorapulse’s content calendar.
You can schedule your Instagram posts to get the following benefits:
Hitting Instagram feeds at the right time for your audience, even if it’s the middle of the night for you!Scheduling posts to go out before lunch for restaurants or exactly midnight on a Friday for a weekend sale!Getting content approvals in advance from compliance or clients in sectors like finance or pharmaceuticalPlanning content and graphics for holidays, events, and promotionsEasily creating well timed countdowns to a launch or product releaseScheduling posts, Reels and Stories. It is possible to include tags when creating your advanced schedule.
Instagram posting tip: Be consistent even if your Instagram posts are varied. Social media algorithms will soon stop showing your posts if you stop getting interaction from fans. It’s not a good idea to skip a few posts if you want to maintain a high engagement rate. The algorithm will notice when you are able to build a genuine, organic relationship with your Instagram audience. This in turn will increase your social media ROI.
Here’s a recap of the best time to post to Instagram
You don’t have to be stressed and frustrated to find out when to post on Instagram. Here’s a recap of what we learned.
It’s not possible to choose the best time to upload to Instagram. There’s no official best time to post on Instagram. It all depends on the audience, the content, the hashtags, the offers you post, as well as numerous other factors.
