I didn’t. And I just learned about his new “blue-tick” verification policy, which basically means that you will now have to pay to be viral on Twitter. I don’t believe I was proven wrong. A man who is not interested in making money through Twitter is unlikely to hide most of Twitter behind a paywall. Only verified accounts are eligible to participate in For You recommendations starting April 15th. This is the only way to stop advanced AI bot swarms from taking over. Otherwise, it is a losing battle. For the same reason, voting in polls will require verification. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk), March 27, 2023 Let’s get to the point. Is this really what the second-richest man in the world is saying about this announcement? Three things Elon Musk is doing: Musk will begin to phase out Twitter’s blue tick verification process in April 2023. The Twitter Blue check mark, which was used to identify accounts that had met certain criteria, was issued only to those accounts. The ceremonial blue badge of honor was not given for money. It was earned. This is what made the blue badge of honor credible. To keep their blue tick, legacy Twitter Verified users must pay $8+ per month starting April 15, 2023. Musk will also be introducing a new blue-tick verification process, Twitter Blue, beginning April 15, 2023. Anyone can get a blue check mark on their profile starting April 15. They don’t have to meet any specific criteria. They only need to prove that they are the person they claim to be. Blue tick twitterers will have the ability to post longer tweets, edit and un-send tweets, and vote in polls. They can also have their content prioritized in searches and in people’s “For You”, feed* (no voice, tick, or tick) and they can use two-factor authentication (no tick and no security). Musk launched a new scheme called the “blue tick for businesses” last December. A business that pays Musk $1,000 per month (minimum) will get a GOLD checkmark on their profile. This will make them a “Verified Organization”. This gold badge of honour will allow verified organizations to get the same Twitter Blue privileges that a “normal” blue ticker. They’ll also be able to add affiliates (for $50 per month), to expand their network. Musk claims that users will still have access to the accounts they follow, despite the backlash caused by the prioritization blue tick content in search results and in people’s “For You” feeds. Why is Elon Musk doing this? “It is the only real way to stop advanced AI bot swarms from taking over. It would be a losing battle. Musk stated that if he gives verified blue-tick users more visibility by prioritizing their tweets and searching-and algorithmically suppressing the non-blue-tick tweeters, he will expose and eliminate all bots, trolling farms and fake accounts from the platform. He might think that Twitter’s real people, who are true to their word, will sign up in droves to be part of the blue-tick brigade so their content can be seen by others. Bots cannot pay subscriptions. Fake accounts cannot prove their identity. If all “real” people are authenticated by paying $8 per month, the only remaining ones without a blue check will be bots, spammers and fakers. Perhaps this is the real reason Musk’s noble quest to banish bad bots from Twitter is admirable. However, I don’t b...
